Church of 'American Idol' Kris Allen Tops List of Fastest-Growing Churches

By Joshua A. Goldberg|Christian Post Reporter

The church of 2009 "American Idol" winner Kris Allen has been named the Fastest-Growing Church in America, based on this year’s annual report by Outreach magazine and LifeWay Research on the 100 fastest-growing U.S. churches.

With an attendance growth of 2,200 (61 percent), New Life Church in Conway, Ark., beat out the more than 8,000 churches that were contacted for Outreach magazine’s annual list, which appears in Outreach’s special report, published last week.

Meanwhile, Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston remains the largest church in America with an attendance of 43,500 – a figure that still far eclipses others on this year's Largest Churches list. The second largest church, LifeChurch.tv, led by Craig Groeschel, reported an attendance of 26,776 across its 13 locations.

For the Fastest-Growing and Largest lists, Outreach partnered with LifeWay for a third consecutive year and made their selections based on February and March weekend attendance averages. The Largest list includes churches of more than 5,600 while the Fastest-Growing list includes churches with attendance greater than 1,000, a numerical gain of 300 or more, and a percentage gain of at least 5 percent. The ranking of Fastest-Growing Churches was determined by an average of their numerical and percentage growth.

“The 2009 Outreach Magazine/LifeWay Research Special Report offers a unique look at many of the churches on the lists to tell the stories behind the numbers-stories of transformed churches and individual life change,” commented Outreach magazine Editor Lindy Lowry.

Combined, the 100 Fastest-Growing churches represent 280 worship sites - an average of almost three per church - which is 86 more than last year.

The 100 Largest churches together represent 331 worship sites and a combined attendance of some 1,012,985 people.

The states with the most churches on the Fastest-Growing list were found to be California (13) followed by Texas (12) and Florida (10). California and Texas also happen to be the states with the most churches on the Largest list with 18 and 15, respectively.

Notably, almost half (47) of the Largest churches identify themselves as “nondenominational” and 9 of the top 10 have multiple sites – what LifeWay director Ed Stetzer called “the new normal for fast-growing and large churches.”

"They're contemporary, aggressively evangelistic and evangelical and they're moving beyond the 'big box' megachurch model,” the researcher told USA Today.

After speaking with the leaders of each church on the Largest list and Fastest-Growing list, Stetzer said he and his team of researchers were encouraged to learn that local churches are not only preaching the Gospel, but also running health clinics, overhauling foreclosed neighborhoods and making serving their community a priority.

“The best churches have very intentional systems to move people from sitting in rows to sitting in circles (in small groups) to going out and making a difference in the world," he noted.

The following are the lists of the top 5 Fastest-Growing U.S. Churches and top 5 Largest U.S. Churches:

    @velrafnelle
The children of Israel entered into Egypt with 70 people and left with millions. Even though they had been oppresed, God kept his faithfulness to Abraham and made them as numerous as the sand on the seashore(Deut. 10:22). While God did ordain Numbers and the numbering of the people(Numbers 1), it wasn't so that the different tribes of Israel could boast about how much THEY had grown, but so that God could show the people how He was able to sustain them and multiply them, even in the wilderness and in lack. Also, he also numbered them after he had punished them for their disobedience (Numbers 26).
In 2 Samuel 24, God made David number the people. He wanted to fulfill his anger against them. Verse 1 says, "And again the anger of the Lord was kindled AGAINST Israel, and HE MOVED David AGAINST them to say, 'Go, NUMBER ISRAEL AND JUDAH'"--(2 Sam. 24:1). Joab, the head of his army, had tried to persuade David against it but not no avail. But in verse 10 David realized his error and asked for mercy from God. 800,000 was numbered of the valiant men and 70,000 died that day... how many of our people are dying today?
Read 2 Samuel 24. Thats the course of the present day church and what our leaders need to do, even now. Ask yourselves, why do you delight in it(2 Sam. 24:3)? What glory does God receive in people claiming HIS SAINTS as their own? Are you counting the wheats with the tares? Only God knows alone the number of his saints, and they're not all in the religous church system... Let God keep track; He alone knows. God bless.

Is it any wonder that Kris Allen’s church happens to be the fastest-growing church in America? He won what is perhaps the most popular contest that our nation has ever seen. Of course the church that he attends (and helps lead worship at) is going to grow.

Allen’s situation is actually indicative of a larger problem within the American church: the cult of celebrity. We seem to have this problem of forgetting who it is we are worshipping, particularly in mega-church contexts. Our churches often become so focused around the talents or charisma of a single person that any growth is attributed to their abilities. Likewise, when that person leaves or dies, our churches seem to struggle until we fill that position with someone comparable.

I’m not saying that Allen’s church is trying to capitalize on his fame, but unless they are actively working against this celebrity-syndrome, they aren’t NOT trying to capitalize on his fame, either – they are just enjoying the growth while they’ve got it. Instead, churches that find their success based around a single personality need to actively work against such idolism, teaching their members that their faith needs to be solidly on Christ, thriving even when our celebrities leave the building.

Isn’t that the job of any church?

I attend New Life Church in Conway. They do not at all promote the idea that Kris Allen goes to their church as some kind of publicity stunt. In fact in the 2007 issue of this same report, way before Kris Allen even auditioned for American Idol, New Life Church was ranked as the 6th fastest growing church in America. They also do not advertise how many members attend church each weekend. You will not find an attendence number posted in the bulletin, on the screen, or anywhere else. What you will find, however, is a group of leaders who love people and want to lead them to Christ. The vision of New Life Church, as stated on their website, "Loving God, Loving People, Loving Life."

Wow! I'm saddened to read some of these posts. If I was "on the fence" about searching for a relationship with Christ, y'all would have pushed me to the other side.

I attended Willow Creek Community Church this past weekend (listed 3 on the list of top 5 churches). If I lived in the Chicago area, I'd be a member of that church. No matter if you are just discovering Christianity or have been a Christian all your life, there is a worship service, small groups, and classes to meet your needs. They offer the complete package...great worship experience, classes that deal with current issues, small groups, social networking opportunities, volunteer opportunities inside and outside the church, and much more. It's the 1st time in a long time that I've left church feeling like I truly heard the message and was excited for the week ahead.

Flagged as inappropriate. show You know the Church size does not matter - however I belong to lifechurch.tv the So. Tulsa Campus and in a short 19 months we have grown from 200 to over 2500 and how awesome is that - God is good all the time and all the time God is good. We have seen so many people surrender their lives to the Lord and that is what matters and what is causing the growth. We the people are the church and our church would not be growing by the masses if we were not going outside of the four walls and reaching the people. hide

Don't you think the word, "idol" would be convicting?...American Idol has nothing to do with the church and the size of the church does not matter. What matters is the ones who go outside the church and preach the gospel to a dying world. Music is good, but it is not above the Word and so many attend church just for the music. If the Word i true and the music is not up to par, then another church is sought. Words of songs are known more than the word of God. For the Word says, If I be lifted up, I will draw all men to me..not to music or an American Idol, but to the saving grace of Jesus..The one the early christians gave their life up for and sang to their death..knowing with full dedication who they serve..One voice filled with the Spirit of God will do more than a thousand christian concerts. I once saw a family living in a large box in an alley, and there was never a need to talk about how big my church is, but to meet the need in the name of Jesus and then to point the way to the only one who can bring to them life abundant..these people attend a small church but know the goodness of God and have become dedicated to the call to reach out to others...the church is not in the building but outside to where the masses are that are in such need of only Jesus..

I wonder how much Ellen's church attendance will go up now that she's on board.

I imagine that being part of a program where you're judged by a lesbian would be sacrilegious, right?

    My head hurts now.

    wwjd,

Yes, 2008 figures for Canada and US did decline for the first time ever, but I was referring to our total number as we are a World Wide Church as opposed to a church that has most its membership in the US like the SBC.

Our growth of 16 million in one year is more than SBC as a whole.

to shredder1 & jsmith175...God is into numbers. All through the Bible the number of people involved in noteworthy events was published. God even included a book in the Bible called Numbers. With signs pointing to the end of the age, it is good to see that Christian churches are reaching large numbers of people.

@chas actually, the yearbook of american and canadian churches reported that the catholic church declined for the first time last year (along with the southern baptists - also for the first time).

Flagged as inappropriate. show Numbers matter! It is called the great commission isn't it? It is ashame that the Largest single church with the most members in the US or on the Planet is not mentioned. Well, you all know who she is. The Bride of Christ the Catholic Church, founded by CHrist on the Apostles 2000 years ago. The first church to bring the Gospel of Christ to every continent and every country on the planet hundreds of years if not a thousand years before there was a Protestant. We grew 16 Million members in 2008 alone, which is more than most denominations have. We have 1.2 Billion Catholics with 67 Million in the US and that number is growing. Most of the numbers mentioned of churches wouldn't even be considered large in Catholic circles. Joel Osteen's group is not a Christian Church, they are a group of Christians who go to large building that listen to motivational speeches and entertaining music with a few lines of scripture, most based on the Health and Wealth Gospel which is ME centered not Christ centered. We Catholics have 850,000 in Houston alone. hide

Perhaps the bigger question is are these new converts or disciples or are they just from another congregation. In other words, is their bigger slice of the pie based on taking from someone else's slice. Just because there may be a large attendance at a congregation does not mean that people are being discipled and that there are new followers of Jesus. The North American church has such an emphasis on numbers and having the "correct" theology that they often lose the bigger picture of the priesthood of all believers and making disciples. May we never lose sight of the important stuff.

You got it right Blacksho89. It seems to me that most "churches" today are more concerned with membership numbers, and being the largest denomination, that actually preaching the gospel. This is Christ church and the church is not some big fancy building with thousands of lost souls.

Is it just me, or does the tone of this article seem non-Scriptural? I thought we were called not to follow Joel, or Kris, or Paul, or Apollos, but Christ.
My beloved former pastor made it a point to say "This is not Harvey's church, it's Jesus'."

"If I be lifted up from the earth I will draw and attract all men (gentiles and jews alike) to Myself ." --John 12:32

"I am the way the truth and the light, no man comes to the father except through me." -- John 14:6

"No man is able to come to Me unless the Father who sent Me attracts and draws him and gives him the desire to come to Me." --- John 6:44

"And there is salvation in and through no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by and in which we must be saved.+ -- Acts 4:12

Those who preach a different gospel are cursed; those who believe a different gospel, a different way other than Jesus, are lost, for there is no other way save through the name of Jesus. How can they hear unless you tell them?

Let us lift up the name of Jesus. Yea, lift up the Name of JESUS in the manner GOD has equipped us.

    *Lift me up through prophesying
    *Lift me up through miracles
    *Lift me up through healings
*Lift me up through casting out devils
*Lift me up through preaching My word
*Lift me up through loving one another
*Lift me up through the testimonies that I have given you.

"In all things, in all ways let your light shine in the darkness; lift up the name of Jesus and I will draw all men unto Me."
