He's Super, But He's No Savior!

 Many of the current blockbusters being developed and produced by Hollywood involve or revolve around superheroes. The popularity of this genre and its films among the masses is undeniable. What is not so clear is what specifically produces this popularity.

Certainly nostalgia for some and entertainment for others, but the cinema plays a much more unique role in our society than either of these ends indicate. It is not merely an outlet for entertainment, but often a pulpit for "sermons" promoting the ideas that reveal our psyche.

And when it comes to superhero movies the ideas run much more religious than many will concede.

Think of Superman, not just his supernatural abilities, but also the storyline. An otherworldly individual sent to earth, who becomes iconic because of his powers, and who ultimately saves humanity from destruction. The similarities to religious, savior narratives are uncanny. However, while similarities exist between Superman and say Jesus, the differences are much more stark.
