13 states that may have abortion referendums in 2024

Arkansas

Voters in Arkansas may be able to vote on “The Arkansas Reproductive Healthcare Amendment,” which would amend the state constitution to read “The government of the State of Arkansas, its officers, or its political subdivisions, shall not prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict access to abortion within 18 weeks of conception, or in cases of rape, incest, in the event of a fatal fetal anomaly, or when abortion is needed to protect the pregnant female’s life or health.”

According to a handbook from the Arkansas Secretary of State’s office, advocates have until July 5 to gather 90,704 signatures from residents of the state, equivalent to 10% of the total number of votes cast in the 2022 Arkansas gubernatorial election. Supporters of the initiative must also secure at least 10% of the total number of votes cast in at least 50 of the state’s counties.

Abortion is banned in Arkansas with exceptions in cases where the life of the mother is in danger.
