A two year contract is required to obtain the deal but the consumer can choose from any of the four largest telecommunication carriers available which include AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint.

However the one cent deal is only for those who sign a new contract. Consumers with preexisting contracts or those seeking to extend their current contract are exempt from the offer. Instead eligibility for a substantial smartphone discount is offered.

This promotional deal is reminiscent of a similar offer Amazon presented in October which sold all of its Verizon phones for the same price as one cent. The same condition of a two year contract was required as well as the same notable exception of the iPhone 4.

Android phones are rapidly outpacing iPhones as the most popular category of smartphone across the globe and one of the primary reasons for this global trend is that they’re offered at low prices rather frequently.

VentureBeat reported: “One of the reasons is that Android phones are frequently offered for very low prices. By contrast, Apple is slow to discount its products, which might account for why Amazon’s one cent sale doesn’t include the iPhone.”

Internet sage Mary Meeker presented a considerable deal of market information at the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco on Tuesday that helps understand the advantage other smartphones have over iPhones.

She presented the growth of the internet and mobile computing as the two major trends in technology that have exceeded the adoptive growth of radio and television. This comparison was used to illustrate the exponential growth ahead of smartphones.

The iPhone’s unit sales in the first 11 quarters of its launch were approximately 40 million while Android was reaching the 150 million units mark.

Among the smartphones being offered at the .01 cent rate until Monday are the Motorola Droid Razr 4G, the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G Touch, a variety of Blackberry’s and many others.
