DOJ referral, players revolt: 3 developments linked to baseball's pride controversy

3. Players refuse to wear pride-themed uniforms

A Pennsylvania independent professional league team opted to forfeit a scheduled pride night game Thursday after team officials announced players refused to wear a rainbow-themed uniform.

The York Revolution announced its decision to forfeit a matchup against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs scheduled for Thursday night because several players were “not comfortable with” the custom uniforms.

The team released statement which read in part: “This decision was not reached lightly. Unfortunately, several of our players have refused to wear the scheduled Pride Night jersey and the club decided that hosting the event is more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they are not comfortable with and playing the game. “

According to The Baltimore Sun, fewer than nine players on the 28-man roster said they would be OK with wearing the jerseys.

Calling the decision “completely inconsistent with our vision” as a supporter of the LGBT community, the team said it would donate $10,000 to a local advocacy center.
