DOJ referral, players revolt: 3 developments linked to baseball's pride controversy

Major League Baseball's warning this week to San Francisco Giants’ players who added biblical messages to their LGBT pride night caps has drawn the attention of federal prosecutors and at least one sitting U.S. senator.

Last weekend, San Francisco Giants pitcher Landen Roupp modified his cap during the team's pride night celebration by drawing a Bible reference next to the team's rainbow-colored emblem.

The hat read “Gen 9:12-16,” an abbreviated reference to Genesis 9, and soon went viral on social media. Reliever J.T. Brubaker did the same, while southpaw Sam Hentges refused to wear the rainbow hat altogether. Shortstop Nick Ahmed wrote Genesis 9:16 on his pride night cap in 2024. 

In the days since, there have been multiple developments surrounding the league's handling of the situation, while an independent league team forfeited a game after players refused to wear their team's pride night uniforms.
