4 NYC mayoral debate highlights: From Mamdani's Hamas views to Cuomo's COVID response

3. Mamdani defends Hamas comments
In his bid to be the first Muslim mayor in the history of New York City, Mamdani has roundly criticized Israel for the conflict in Gaza. During Thursday's debate, he sought to clarify his responses from a Fox News interview on Wednesday over whether Hamas should abide by the newly-declared ceasefire.
"Of course, I believe that they should lay down their arms," said Mamdani.
When questioned by Cuomo why Mamdani has so far failed to condemn Hamas, he responded, "I've said time and again that I recognize Israel's right to exist," he said, adding, "I would not recognize any state's right to exist with a system of hierarchy on the basis of race or religion."
