4 NYC mayoral debate highlights: From Mamdani's Hamas views to Cuomo's COVID response

4. Candidates compare rent, grocery costs
Pivoting from politics, the mayoral debate turned to pocketbook issues and the ever-rising cost of living in the Big Apple.
When the moderator asked the candidates to compare their weekly grocery spending, their responses were nearly identical. Cuomo estimated spending about $150, while Mamdani gave a range of $125 to $150, "now that eggs are down to less than four bucks."
Sliwa's estimate came in slightly higher at $175 due to rising prices of milk and bread, he said.
When asked whether they had credit card debt, both Cuomo and Mamdani said they pay off their balances monthly, while Sliwa said he does not use a credit card.
All three candidates, meanwhile, acknowledged the city's soaring housing costs hitting their own pocketbooks. Mamdani said he pays about $2,300 a month, Cuomo about $7,800, and Sliway about $3,900 monthly.
