2. Progressive gubernatorial candidate narrowly loses in Wisconsin
A week after self-described democratic socialist Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic nomination in the U.S. Senate election in Michigan, another candidate in the same mold failed to win the Democratic primary in the Wisconsin gubernatorial election.
Unofficial results show democratic socialist Francesca Hong taking 39.3% of the vote in the Democratic primary, coming in behind primary winner David Crowley’s 39.8%. The remaining vote was split between well-known candidates who dropped out of the race and minor candidates.
Hong, the daughter of South Korean immigrants, drew attention in recent weeks for her previous statements, specifically a 2020 X post in which the candidate proclaimed “Cancel Thanksgiving.” She insisted that the U.S. “Should have done this in 1621,” adding “If it takes a worldwide pandemic for us to realize we should stop celebrating colonialism and the original superspreader event that killed [indigenous folks] and women so be it.”
Going into the primary, public opinion polling of hypothetical general election matchups in the Wisconsin gubernatorial election showed Hong performing worse against Republican candidate Tom Tiffany than Crowley. The RealClearPolitics average of polls asking voters who they would support in a general election between Tiffany and Hong shows Tiffany beating Hong by 1.7 percentage points.
By contrast, the RealClearPolitics average of polls documenting voter sentiments in a matchup between Tiffany and Crowley shows Crowley leading by 2 percentage points. Tiffany overwhelmingly won the Republican nomination for governor with over 95% of the vote Tuesday, paving the way for him to face off against Crowley in November.
