'God resides in each of us': 4 highlights from Vivek Ramaswamy's Iowa town hall

4. Ramaswamy defends requiring civics test to vote

When a voter informed Ramaswamy that his effort to convince his friend to support the candidate hit a road block due to his concerns about his plans to require a civics test in order to vote, Ramaswamy defended the idea even as he admitted it doesn't poll well.

“Citizenship is about allegiance, it’s about duty,” Ramaswamy said. “The basic table stakes of your duty to this country should be to know the bare minimums about this country and the Constitution and our history.”

Noting how immigrants are required to pass a civics test in order to become citizens, Ramaswamy asserted, “If we require that of a legal immigrant to this country before they cast a ballot at a ballot box, I think it’s reasonable for every high school senior who graduates from high school to at least know the bare minimums about the country that every immigrant has to know as a condition for becoming a voting citizen in this country before the age of 25.”

Ramaswamy listed several exceptions he would like to see for a civics test requirement, including service in the military or as a first responder and life experience as an adult.
