AMAs winners are determined by fans by online voting at www.AMA.ABC.com. This makes the AMAs more special than other honors, says James Valentine, guitarist of Marron 5.

"I mean, any sort of recognition is great for us but, yeah, because the fans are voting, it does feel a little bit more special. You appreciate the love from the fans," Valentine said, according to ABC.

The artists are competing in 9 categories that include: Pop/Rock, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul/R&B, Alternative, Adult Contemporary, Latin, Contemporary Inspiration and Electronic Dance Music.

This year marks the first time of the Electronic Dance Music category.

Maroon 5 is not expected to be at the event, due to its performance on "Saturday Night Live" the night before. However, the group integrants will be watching from New York City.

The evening will also present Stevie Wonder and Ryan Seacrest who will pay tribute to the late Dick Clark, the creator of the AMAs four decades ago.

The event is produced by dick clark productions, inc. (DCP) Allen Shapiro and Orly Adelson will executive produce the show.

The 40th Anniversary American Music Awards will be aired live tonight, Sunday, Nov. 18th at 8 p.m. ET. on ABC.

Videos of full aired episodes of the American Music Awards and promo videos of the 40th Anniversary event can be watched online on the ABC website here.
