As Mike Winger targets The Passion Translation, here are 5 Bible apps that don’t host it

Following Bible teacher Mike Winger’s decision to delete the YouVersion Bible app over its continued inclusion of The Passion Translation (TPT), many Christians have begun searching for alternative Bible apps that don't offer the controversial paraphrase.

Winger intensified his criticism this week, sharing a screenshot on X of a YouVersion advertisement promoting TPT and explaining that the issue extends beyond hosting the translation.

"YouVersion not only carries The Passion Translation after YEARS of it being exposed as sectarian, unreliable ... misleading," Winger wrote. "This isn't just a translation I don't like ... It's an affront to the Word of God and the people of God."

The controversy surrounding The Passion Translation has grown significantly in recent years. 

Critics argue that TPT takes extensive interpretive liberties with the biblical text, while numerous Evangelical scholars, pastors and apologists have challenged creator Brian Simmons' claims about his translation process and qualifications. Meanwhile, a recent investigative video by the YouTube channel Minor Prophets accused Simmons of plagiarism and misleading statements regarding his educational background and translation credentials.

The debate intensified further after Bible Gateway removed TPT from its platform in 2022, citing concerns raised by scholars and translation experts. More recently, a Change.org petition calling on YouVersion to remove TPT has gathered thousands of signatures, with Winger among its most prominent supporters.
