Shane Claiborne, a progressive Christian activist and author, conveyed his support for Bishop Budde in a post to his X account, referring to the clergywoman as a friend.
“So grateful to my dear friend and sister Bishop Mariann Budde for bearing witness to the love and mercy and compassion of our God. This is what it looks like to speak the truth in love,” tweeted Claiborne.
Claiborne has been a critic of Trump, denouncing the then-Republican presidential candidate in an op-ed piece for Religion News Service published in advance of the 2024 election.
“A committed follower of Jesus, I see no way to defend Donald Trump, who has made a vocation out of the seven deadly sins,” wrote Claiborne at the time.
“The former president's rhetoric and policies are not only un-Christlike, they are so devoid of love and compassion and decency that even my conservative friends don’t know what to do.”
