4. Newsom denies Biden’s mental decline, says he ‘saw a different person’ at fundraiser

Toward the end of their discussion, Newsom discussed how he spent about 90 minutes with Trump in the Oval Office in recent weeks. This prompted Kirk to suggest that “[former President] Joe Biden couldn’t do five minutes,” to which Newsom replied, “I did almost 90 minutes with Biden right before he left.”

When Kirk inquired as to whether Biden was “sentient” during their conversation, Newsom assured him that “he 100 percent was.” Kirk asserted that he didn't believe it, and asked Newsom if he thought the former president showed “any mental decline.”

After reminding Newsom how he defended Biden amid calls for him to drop out of the 2024 presidential election due to concerns about his mental faculties following the first presidential debate against Trump last year, the governor identified a “big fundraiser” that took place in Los Angeles as the “one exception” that might back up Kirk’s assertions about the former president’s cognitive decline.

“I saw a different person,” Newsom said as he reflected on that event. He implied to Kirk that he believed that Biden’s declining mental condition that day might have stemmed from fatigue following a trip to Europe.
