5 highlights from primary elections in Florida, Wyoming and Alaska
2. Lawmaker facing ethics investigation loses primary
Unofficial results show Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., losing the Republican primary to challenger Ryan Elijah. Elijah will advance to the general election in the race to represent Florida’s 7th Congressional District, where he will face off against Democrat Bale Dalton.
Mills’ primary loss comes as the lawmaker is under investigation by the U.S. House of Representatives’ Ethics Committee over an allegation that he assaulted a woman he was in a relationship with, and an injunction prohibiting him from going within 500 feet of a woman’s residence or place of employment.
Additional allegations against Mills that prompted the investigation include potential violations of campaign finance law, improper solicitation or receipt of gifts, receipt of special favors because of his position and misuse of congressional resources.
In a Truth Social post Wednesday, Trump acknowledged that he told Mills, whom he described as “a friend of mine,” to “get out of the Race, but he wouldn’t listen.” Trump offered his endorsement to Elijah.
Going into Tuesday’s primary, Mills repeatedly touted an endorsement from Trump on social media. While Trump did endorse Mills’ re-election bid earlier this year, Mills was notably not included in a series of Truth Social posts endorsing the president’s preferred candidates ahead of primary day.
