A new set of states held primary elections this week ahead of the upcoming midterms, even as the dust finally settled on unresolved races from last week's contests in California.

The results reinforced two familiar themes of the 2026 cycle: President Donald Trump's enduring sway over Republican primaries and the fierce competition shaping up in a handful of marquee general-election races.

Trump-endorsed candidates again fared well in South Carolina and Nevada, while in Maine and California, voters and election officials set the stage for high-stakes November showdowns. The Maine Senate race and the California governor's race — both now officially decided at the primary level — are likely to draw national attention in the months ahead.

Here are five highlights from Tuesday's primaries and new information about the California races.
