Voters in California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota went to the polls Tuesday in primary elections to determine which candidates will advance to the general election in multiple federal, statewide and local races.

Following Tuesday’s primaries, a total of 21 states have held primary elections for this year’s midterm elections, which will determine control of both chambers of the United States Congress for President Donald Trump’s final two years in office.

Both parties’ candidates in five U.S. Senate races were determined Tuesday, while closely watched races in California remain unresolved. The night also featured a rare example of a Trump-endorsed candidate losing.

Here are five highlights from Tuesday’s primary elections.
