5. $53M to fund experiments using aborted babies’ tissue and organs
Lankford criticized the National Institutes of Health for spending $53 million in 2024 on dozens of research projects using the tissue of human beings killed during elective abortions.
The Republican senator noted that the NIH canceled the grants after the watchdog group White Coat Waste Project reported in September 2025 that the agency was still funding, and that President Donald Trump’s administration ended funding for research using aborted baby tissue when there are ethical alternatives.
Still, Lankford warned that if Congress doesn’t pass a statutory prohibition, then another administration “could resume or expand such projects at any time, forcing taxpayers to fund research that is both immoral and scientifically obsolete."
