Memorial Day: 7 sacred songs of solemn remembrance, hope for peace

Who is on the Lord's Side?

Poet and hymn writer Frances Ridley Havergal, the daughter of prolific hymn writer the Rev. William Havergal, penned “Who is on the Lord’s Side?” in 1877, two years before she died.

“The astounding gifts of Frances were used in serving God wholeheartedly. Several hymns including ‘Who is on the Lord’s side?’ are credited to her. She wrote this particular hymn as a marching song for kids,” stated an entry on the Assemblies of God Campus Ministry website.

“Though the message is captured from Exodus 32:26, where Moses returns from God to find the Israelites in idolatry, she also speaks to us in modern times. In this era where we are faced with hard choices, whose side will you be on?”
