5. China: Peace apples

The direct Chinese translation of “Christmas Eve” means “peaceful evening.” The phrase sounds like the Chinese word for “apple,” so some Chinese Christians give each other ‘peace apples’ during the Christmas season.

In Chinese culture, the apple’s association with Christmas has given it a cultural meaning of bringing safety and peace. Christians deliver “peace apples” in special gift boxes for each other.
