Adrienne Bailon and Israel Houghton dated for only six month before they got engaged. Now, the bride-to-be is revealing how she knew she wanted to spend the rest of her life with the Christian singer.

"We were friends for three years before. And I think that makes a big difference," Bailon revealed on "Hollywood Today Live" two weeks ago. "And being older, you kind of know what you want. I think when you're younger you have to date around, kind of see what you like, what you don't. There's different things, honestly, from different people I've dated that I'm like, 'I love this quality, don't love that quality so much.'"

Now that she's 33, Bailon insists that she knows what she wants in a relationship, qualities that she has found in her Houghton who she calls her best friend. Instead of trying to impress the frontman of Israel & New Breed she focused on a friendship with the Christian singer before things took a romantic turn.

"We never thought we'd end up together, which allows you not to have your representative there. When you like somebody and you're going into the relationship liking them, you have ulterior motives," she said. "We'd hang out with a bunch of friends and I would say ridiculous things out of my mouth that I probably wouldn't say if I really liked him. And he got to know the real me and I love that."

Earlier this year, Houghton echoed similar sentiments by revealing that Bailon was also his best friend.

"A friend loves at all times," Houghton wrote in an Instagram post, quoting Proverbs 17:17. "She @adriennebailon is my best friend. Wanna know why? Because, in times of adversity and storms, she loved me AND my flaws."

Houghton defended the pair's relationship earlier this year, after announcing that he was officially divorced. While some questioned if Bailon had anything to do with the demise of his marriage, the 44-year-old singer let the world know that was not the case.

"I understand that gossip and salacious untrue speculative stories are far more interesting and entertaining than the truth and facts. But, it's incredibly unfair to allow someone to carry the burden, blame and shame of something they had nothing to do with," Houghton wrote in a lengthy Facebook post last March. "I met Adrienne Bailon a bit over two years ago, we worked together and became friends. Our circles connected and we remained good friends. From a friendship, as two single adults, we have very recently begun to explore a dating relationship."

While on her talk show "The Real," Bailon also sought to clear up rumors.

"God forbid the facts get in the way of a really juicy story," she explained on "The Real." "I'm going to say the truth and the truth of the matter is he isn't married. He obviously is divorced."
