Al Gore Leaks iPhone Secret During Speech

Al Gore, the former vice president of the United States and a member of the board of directors for Apple, may have accidentally leaked some information about the secret release date of the much anticipated iPhone 5.

Mashable reports that while presenting a speech at the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit in South Africa on Wednesday, Gore said in an aside to his speech, “Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month. That was a plug.”

His hint toward the release date isn't necessarily big news in and of itself. Rumors have been swarming for sometime about the upcoming release of the newest device in a successful line of Apple phones.

The surprise lies in the fact that no Apple representatives, especially not one as high up on the chain as Gore, have ever confirmed those rumors, until now.

To make things more interesting, Gore used the plural “iPhones” instead of “iPhone” in yesterday's slip of the tongue.

He may have simply been referring to the many copies of the iPhone 5 that are being produced, though some suspect that another device, such as the rumored iCloud iPhone, will also be released next month.

The so-called iCloud iPhone is expected to be cheaper and have less memory than the other versions of the device. An article published on AppleNApps.com in August said that this new device will likely become the “star of the show” and could be offered by wireless carriers for free with a two-year contract. The article did not mention the names of its sources.

On Wednesday morning, AllThingsD reported that the iPhone 5 is to be unveiled on October 4, citing “sources close to the situation.” Those sources also said that Apple's plan is to make the device available for purchase just a few weeks following the announcement.

The announcement, whenever it may come, will certainly be a big deal for many technology lovers, as this will be the first major Apple media event since the resignation of the company's former CEO, Steve Jobs.

The new CEO, Tim Cook, is a much less familiar face, and, as he prepares to make the first big product announcement with the company under his leadership, he can certainly anticipate that both critical and curious eyes will be watching him.
