'Better Call Saul' Season 3 Episode 2: Cliffhangers Are a Way to Reward Fans, Says EP

The third season of AMC's crime drama series "Better Call Saul" has begun, and it just put "Gene" from Omaha's fate hanging in the balance.

The usual season opener featuring a man named Gene, who is really Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), took a surprising turn when the lawyer in him leaped up and cried, "Say nothing, you understand?! Get a lawyer!" to the young shoplifter he just narced on. He did this while the kid was being led by the police. What will the repercussions of this outburst be? And will the fans have to wait until the next season to find out what happens to Gene?

In a phone interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series co-creator Vince Gilligan admitted to having a sadistic streak, but that they trust the fans to stay on with the show for the long haul.

"Fans keep tabs on story details and plot points and little snippets of detail and information. I'm not sure most other shows have fans quite like ours in the sense that our fans really do have an extreme amount of patience and attention to detail and God bless 'em for that," Gilligan said.

He also shared that should they decide to put off revealing what happens next in Omaha until the following season, it would not be to punish their audience, but rather to reward them for their intelligence.

"Maybe I'm looking through the wrong end of the telescope, but think of it as people's attention being paid off, although sometimes later rather than sooner," Gilligan added.

The official synopsis for the next episode reveals that Jimmy and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) will be hiring an assistant. On the other hand, Mike (Jonathan Banks) will be seeking out a mysterious acquaintance, while Chuck (Michael McKean) thinks of using the law in order to gain some advantage over his brother, Jimmy.

"Better Call Saul" season 3 episode 2 airs on Monday, April 17 at 10 p.m. EDT on AMC.
