Bible League Joins 2006 List of 'Best Christian Places to Work'

The Bible League was recently named one of the Best Christian Places to Work in the United States.

The Bible League was recently named one of the Best Christian Places to Work in the United States.

During an awards ceremony at last month's Christian Management Association convention in Denver, the Chicago-based Scripture ministry was recognized as a top-40 finalist in the fourth annual survey by the Best Christian Workplaces Institute (BCWI), the results of which are published in the April issue of Christianity Today magazine. The Bible League was awarded second place in the parachurch/mission organization category.

"We are certainly pleased with this kind of recognition by our employees," said Lori Hoekstra, Bible League's executive vice president of administration, in a released statement. "It is evidence that we offer the opportunity for our staff to use their God-given gifts and abilities to advance the mission of the Bible League."

In over 50 countries, the Bible League works with local churches and teaches them to draw seekers into Bible studies. In 2005, Christians trained by the Bible League gathered 3,354,265 people into small group Bible studies, the ministry reported. In addition, 468,338 new Christians became church members as a result of the ministry and 5,521 new congregations were established in previously unreached communities.

“We do not consider our mission completed until new converts are enfolded into the fellowship of a church,” the Bible League states in its website.

The BCWI workplace survey, which was first conducted several years ago, asked more than 10,600 employees in 93 organizations across the United States to identify great workplaces with a Christian mission and/or values, posing questions to employees around six major categories – attraction and retention, motivation and commitment, empowerment and relationships, rewards and benefits, growth and development, and Christian values. An independent panel of judges then weighted the employee scores, the employee survey participation rates and profiles in order to select the finalists.

Last year’s list, in order to avoid the unfairness, broke up participants into 11 categories. After independent judges weighed the data in a "blind" process, the list of 40 emerged.

Based on this year’s survey, the “Best Christian Places to Work” in the United States are experiencing strong growth, low employee turnover and high levels of trust between employees and management.

Al Lopus, president of BCWI, said research from the survey also indicated that participating organizations demonstrate high levels of character, competence, and compassion, while employees show high levels of commitment.
