Chaz Bono Debuts on New Season of Dancing With the Stars

The most talked-about contestant of the new season of Dancing With the Stars, Chaz Bono, dazzled the jury performing cha-cha with his partner, Lacey Schwimmer, and earned 17 points Tuesday.

“Great, great debut,” judge Bruno Tonioli said. “You should be proud.”

Another judge, Len Goodman, said the performance was “right on time,” and praised Bono’s footwork.

Bono, the only child of Sonny and Cher, is a writer, actor, a gay rights advocate and a female-to-male transgender man.

At the beginning of September, when Bono’s participation in the show was confirmed, a part of the Christian community worried that it might not be appropriate to feature a transgendered contestant in a family program, as the issue of sex change might be inappropriate for children.

The Christian Post has experienced a significant interest from its readers:

“Chaz Bono has as much right to dance as anybody else, it is his choice what lifestyle he chooses to live and it's his choice!” Commenter Lori S. Nichols wrote on The Christian Post's website.

But some commenters were more skeptical:

Bill Rogers declared that he will never watch the show again, nor buy any of the products advertised on it.

Meanwhile, Jackie Trapp Price wrote: “Personally, I don't care if Chaz Bono dances on the show or not as long as the issue of her/his genitalia altering surgery and the reason behind it doesn't become fodder for commentary during the show at all.”
