'Covert Affairs' Season 5 Spoilers: Ryan 'Intrigued' by Annie, Auggie Takes A Stand

"Covert Affairs" returns to USA on Tuesday with a brand-new episode "False Skorpian."

Season five got off to a quick start last week with Annie displaying a new side of herself, but a sneak peek at "False Skorpian" reveals even more about Auggie this season. The first look at the new episode features Auggie taking a stand against his superiors.

"They want to waste my time, they can send somebody down here with a subpoena and a taser," he says defiantly in the teaser released to TVLine.

Meanwhile, there is a new man in Annie's life -- contractor Ryan McQuaid, who could come between Annie and Auggie.

"He's very intrigued by her," actor Nic Bishop said of his character to TVLine. "He's going to try and acquire as much information about someone like her as quickly as he possible can."

However, Bishop knows that his character has challenges in both winning over Annie as well as "Covert Affairs" fans.

"I think I've got a bit of an uphill climb in front of me," the actor said. "Auggie is a much loved character. I can absolutely see why – Chris [Gorham] is great in that role, and he's been a fan favorite for a long time. With any show that's been going for a while, the need to reinvent the energy and keep thinking of ways to challenge the characters and challenge the audience."

"So that's what this is going to do. The introduction of my character is certainly going to challenge the audience," he continued. "I just hope they get onboard because McQuaid is a great character. He's a character with a lot of integrity, and he's really good for her in a lot of ways."

As previously reported, Annie and Auggie's relationship is challenged by the demands of their jobs this season, and the premiere featured "a bit of a reset" between the characters.

"The central question on this show has always been, 'Can you separate work and personal life? Can you keep them both compartmentalized,'" executive producer Matt Corman postured to TVLine. "They always bleed into one another and they always challenge and compromise one another. Again, that's the main theme of this season, and we press that in a big way off the bat."

"Covert Affairs" airs on USA Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EST. The synopsis for "False Skorpian" is as follows: "Annie may have to work with Ryan McQuaid to capture a terrorist. Elsewhere, Auggie is questioned by the NCTC regarding a threat facing the intelligence community."
