Dinesh D'Souza's New Film to Answer 'What if America Never Existed?'

Conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, hoping to replicate the box office success of his political documentary, "2016: Obama's America," is going into production for a new film with his same team simply titled, "America."

"We are now living in the America that we warned our fellow citizens could come to pass if President Obama were re-elected," said D'Souza, who will return as writer and host. The film's announcement came on Saturday during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) to "continue the dialogue with the audience."

"Like it or not America is now the nation that Barack Obama Junior and Senior dreamed of creating. Americans are right to be terrified as they see the transformation of America take place before their very eyes. But it's at great moments of peril like this that we need to regroup and rediscover the first principles of what made America great," he said.

Although the movie's producers reference Obama in their announcement, they said "America" is not a sequel to "2016" in the truest sense. In a trailer for the film, D'Souza asks, "What would the world look like if America never existed?"

"To paraphrase George Bailey in 'It's A Wonderful Life,' the question all people should ask from time to time is what would the world look like if America never was – and that's a question I often ask myself," added D'Souza. "President Obama looks at America as an oppressive force, both against its own citizens and abroad, while I and millions of others around the world have a different view: that America has been a great blessing to its own people and to the world. We intend to provide both serious answers and have some fun as we take Obama's dreams for America to their logical conclusions."

Last year, "2016: Obama's America" became the second highest grossing political documentary of all time. The film examined the question: "If Obama wins a second term, where will we be in 2016?" D'Souza told The Christian Post last year that the movie is based on a combination of material from his two books, The Roots of Obama's Rage, and Obama's America.

"Obama's goal is to shrink America. He wants to reduce America's footprint in the world because he thinks we are stepping on the world," he said in the interview with CP. "He wants to redistribute money away from the rich and toward the poor. But we are not talking about the rich and the poor in America solely. We are talking about a redistribution of income away from the rich countries – America included – toward the poor countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Columbia, and so on."

"America" is scheduled to release in mid 2014 and will be directed by John Sullivan. Gerald Molen, who won a best picture Oscar for producing "Schindler's List" with Steven Spielberg in 1993, will executive produce "America," as he did for "2016."

"We intend to bring the same level of excellence, integrity and honesty to this production and, if we're successful, we'll once again be embraced by the American filmgoing public and ignored by the Oscars," quipped Molen.

Last year, many movie industry watchers were shocked by "2016" in the way it came from seemingly nowhere, "opening on a single screen in Houston, Texas, and spreading to nearly 2,000 screens within two months, eventually earning $33.5 million on a production budget of $2.5 million," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The only political documentary to do better in sales than "2016" was Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, which made $119.2 million on a production budget of $6 million in 2004.
