Essential Phone News: Smartphone Receives $200 Price Cut

Newbies in the smartphone market are doing their best to keep up, including Android co-founder Andy Rubin's company. The Essential Phone was just recently launched, and reports have revealed that the company deemed it necessary to cut the price of the smartphone from $699 to $499.

The smartphone competition has reached an unprecedented level of competition in the recent years. Tech giants are vying for the attention of the consumers by optimizing the performance and aesthetics of their flagship smartphones.

"We want to make it even easier for you to experience our products and our brand. So starting today we're offering Essential Phone for $499 on Essential.com," said Essential's president and chief operating officer Niccolo de Masi in a statement. "Our small, but mighty, team is listening to your feedback and working to deliver products that put consumer experience above all else. We look forward to you joining us on this journey."

The announcement comes after several reports of how the Essential Phone had been doing subpar, partly because it was released during the hype season for Apple's iPhone and Google's Pixel. Although many critics lauded the forward-thinking design of the Essential Phone, it lacked the camera standards and water resistance that many smartphones in the market are currently offering.

Despite this, the company sold their flagship with a high-end price tag, which made many hesitate in purchasing it despite its top of the line software.

Aside from the $200 price cut, those who purchased the phone at the original price will be given a gift card that can be used on the website for various accessories or to augment the cost of another Essential Phone. Considering the huge price slash, this move is expected to boost the sales, especially since the hardware, design, and software of the Essential Phone arguably rivals what others, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, offers.
