The death of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., has prompted tributes from Evangelical figures, American politicians and world leaders who had known or worked with him over the years. Their tributes point to characteristics they believe define his life and legacy.

Graham died on Saturday, at the age of 71, shortly after returning from a visit to Ukraine. His office initially said he had died following a “brief and sudden illness;” subsequent reports identified the cause as an aortic dissection, a tear in the body’s main artery.

Graham was known as a conservative Republican who formed close friendships with Democrats and a former critic of Donald Trump who later became one of the president’s closest congressional allies. He was also known for his support for federal abortion restrictions and for advocating for persecuted Christians.

Here are eight reactions to the death of Lindsey Graham.
