While many consider the stars and stripes to be a special symbol, according to Guinness World Records, it is also a record-breaker for the most changes to a national flag.

Guinness currently lists the American flag as the record holder for “Most changes to a national flag,” as the banner has undergone 26 revisions since it was first unveiled in the 1770s.

This was due to the practice of adding stars to the blue corner every time states were added to the union, with the most recent version, with 50 stars, being officially adopted in 1960.

While impressive, the record is not a distant first place, Guinness noted, as Afghanistan has had 20 changes made to its national flag since the beginning of the 20th century.
