Flag Day: 7 interesting facts about the American flag and its history
7. Largest ones
The largest known American flag ever made was created by Thomas “Ski” Demski, a California resident whose “Super Flag” measured 255 feet by 505 feet and weighed around 3,000 pounds.
The Super Flag was commissioned in 1981, with stars 17 feet high and stripes 20 feet wide. The banner reportedly requires around 600 volunteers to transport it to display events.
While the Super Flag is the biggest American flag, Acuity Insurance of Wisconsin boasts the tallest flagpole to carry a United States banner and the largest known free-flying American flag.
The Acuity flagpole is around 400 feet tall, while the flag it waves is 70 feet by 140 feet, weighing around 250 pounds. The company dubs it “the world’s tallest symbol of freedom.”
Not to be outdone, it was reported last year that President Donald Trump’s America250 organization was working on creating the new largest American flag in existence.
The banner was to measure 776 feet wide and 1,492 feet long, Fox News reported last September, with the finished product expected to be about half the size of the Pentagon.
