It was a big day for Ryleigh Gardner, her last one as a third grader at Shamong Elementary School in Schamong Township, N.J. A class assignment had Ryleigh choose a role model, and the decision was easy: her big brother, Frank "Tommy" Schaffer, a Pay Officer Second Class in the Navy. The hard thing was that Ryleigh hadn't seen Tommy for three years.

Then, as she shared her assignment onstage, out from behind the curtain came the best surprise she's gotten in three years.
