Gospel singer Guy Penrod is asking for prayers as he faces a serious health diagnosis, saying his health challenges have caused him to gain a renewed appreciation for life while acknowledging that he doesn't want to cast a “net of fear.”

Penrod appeared on an episode of the "#JustWhenever" podcast Monday, hosted by his former bandmate Mark Lowry. Both Penrod and Lowry were members of the Gaither Vocal Band, a Christian music group.

After Lowry said he wished Penrod would move to his neighborhood, Penrod said “the days ahead hold some different things” for him and his wife. He revealed that “we are dealing with a bit of a medical issue with me.”

“I haven’t told anyone yet,” he said. “It just caused us a pause to think about things.”

When Penrod initially declined to elaborate on his health challenges, Lowry asked him “What’s God been teaching you through all this?” Penrod responded by assuring his former bandmate that he has learned “so much” from his experience, summarizing James 4:14, stating, “Life is but a vapor; it’s here for a little while and vanishes away.”

Penrod said another lesson he's learned is “don’t hold a grudge,” adding that he and his wife have “tried to slow some things down and be intentional.” When Lowry asked Penrod “how can people pray for you,” Penrod described his illness as “serious” and “not something that can be healed.”

“There’s only one potential fix for it, and it’s a bone marrow transplant,” Penrod explained, characterizing his illness as “blood stuff in the bones.” He stressed that he was not “freaked out” by his diagnosis and did not wish to cast “a net of fear.” According to Penrod, “I know there are diagnoses all up and down that list and problems and difficulties that folks have dealt with. So, I’m no different than anyone else in that regard.”

Penrod directed a message at the audience, noting that “we all serve the same God” and expressing hope that “a team of warriors like you” would “call on God and [bring] my name up to Him.” The video concluded with a series of prayers, which the audience viewing the podcast live were invited to participate in.

“Father, thank you so much for Guy Penrod,” Lowry proclaimed. “Thank you for all he has meant to my life all these years. Lord, you know more than the doctors do about his situation. And nothing ever takes you by surprise. Father, will you touch your son and heal him from the top of his head to the sole of his feet? Lord, would you fix whatever needs to be fixed? Would you guide the doctors’ minds? Would you give them supernatural wisdom? Lord, just would you put your warring angels and your healing angels all around us right now?”

Penrod offered up a prayer of his own for the audience. “I would like to pray for those watching,” he declared. “You have needs or you have loved ones with needs. So, Father, we pray for our brothers ,and sisters as they walk the road of life and they deal with what comes at them. Father, may your spirit encourage, uplift, heal, deliver, strengthen, [and] provide all the needs that are represented here. Provide for all of them.”

“Give us a fresh dose of your love for us because we know that by understanding that, it produces the byproduct of good fruit. Thank you for it and we receive your love today, Jesus,” he added. As the video drew to a close, Lowry asked viewers to “pray that Guy Penrod will be healed from the top of his head to the sole of his feet.”
