History Channel's 'Knightfall' Release Date News: Crusades-Themed Series Gets Fall Premiere

Get ready to shout "Deus Vult!" as a new Crusades-centered drama on the History Channel is set to premiere this fall. "Knightfall" follows the exploits and intrigues of the legendary Knights Templar during the Middle Ages as they fight in the Holy Land and seek the legendary Holy Grail.

After the massive success of Vikings, the History Channel will air the Jeremy Renner-produced series starting this December. Created by Don Handfield and Richard Rayner, the series delves into the medieval politics and warfare of the Knights Templar, the most powerful military order during the Crusades tasked with protecting Christianity's most holy relics.

"Knightfall" begins in the city of Acre, the Templars' last remaining stronghold in the Holy Land after having lost the Holy Grail. Years later, the order receives clues on the relic's whereabouts and, under the leadership of the Templar Knight Landry (Tom Cullen), once again undergoes a dangerous mission to recover the lost cup of Christ.

Focusing on themes such as belief, sacrifice, politics, love, power, and revenge, the series dives deep into this order of warriors who are often depicted as larger than life. For the first time, viewers will get to see how they live, how they fought, and how they died, all for a belief that survives to this day.

The series will star Cullen along with other Downton Abbey alumni, Jim Carter and Julian Ovenden. They will be joined by Spartacus' Simon Merrells who plays Tancrede and The Tudors' Pádraic Delaney as one of the order's great swordsmen.

Ed Stoppard (The Crown), Olivia Ross (War and Peace), Sabrina Bartlett (DaVinci's Demons), Bobby Schofield (Black Sean), and Sarah-Sofie Boussnina (The Bridge) will also be joining the cast.

Catch the premiere of Don Handfield and Richard Rayner's "Knightfall" this Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 10 PM ET only on the History Channel.
