Ice Cream Sandwich Ported to Motorola and Asus Tablets

Google’s Android 4.0 OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, is now available to owners of Motorola’s Xoom and Asus’ Transformer Prime.

According to reports, the Android 4.0 update has rolled out to the Motorola Xoom tablet. Tech blog website noted that select Xoom owners were notified about the impending release through e-mail.

The e-mail stated, "Thanks for your patience as we've waited for this project to begin. Because we are dealing with a Google Experience Device (GED) we have less insight to timing than we would usually have. However, I'm happy to announce that we will start the update this evening. Because it was delayed a few days, we will also have additional time to test; we will let it run through the weekend."

Over on the XDA Developers forum website, members posted up the update as the IML77 OS at first. This operating system is known not to feature Ice Cream Sandwich, though.

Now with the announcement of this OS update for the Xoom, it is proof that the tablet is getting Google’s new software.

At the moment, a few thousand select Xoom Wi-Fi owners will receive the update as part of an initial and private test. Motorola has stated that it will deploy ICS to all users of its tablet if the test presents positive results.

Motorola’s tablet isn’t the only device that’s receiving Ice Cream Software. The Transformer Prime tablet from Asus also received the latest edition of Android. Earlier this month, Asus announced that it would send out ICS to Prime owners as of yesterday.

CNET reported that a spokeswoman for Asus told them the software update released early. The ICS update for the Transformer Prime rolled out to the U.S. and Taiwan Tuesday night, ahead of schedule.

Owners of the original Transformer tablet will get Ice Cream Sandwich in early February. Motorola and Xoom’s tablets join the long list of tablet devices that feature Ice Cream Sandwich.
