iPhone 5 Release Date: iOS 5.0.1 Update Adding New Features to Siri?

New reports about Apple's iOS 5.0.1 OS point to the company updating the voice enabled Siri feature.

German-language website Macerkopf.de said the iOS 5.1 operating system update will allow Siri to manage the iPhone 4S's hardware aspects.

Technology website 9to5Mac summarized the iOS 5.1-update news: "According to the report, iOS 5.1, the first major update, will bring some Siri extensions that include hardware control. You’ll be able to tell her to “take a picture”; the story has it, to "make a video", "switch on/off WiFi/Bluetooth" and more. None of this is terribly surprising as Apple is of course expected to continue perfecting Siri and bring out new features such as greater control of the handset."

A major update to Siri through iOS 5.1 brings up a slew of interesting possibilities for the future of Apple's smartphone.

Users could access various applications and accessories with their current iPhone by interacting with Siri. One could issue commands to it, such as: "Open my garage door," "Tweet this: Today was an awesome day!" or "Post a Facebook status message saying, 'Hope everyone had a ball at my birthday party!'"

The possibilities for an updated Siri are endless. However, a forum user for 9to5Mac thinks an update might not be all it's cracked up to be.

"Wireless makes sense but why would you say, ‘Take a picture?’ I'm pretty sure that the delay between pressing the button and speaking is longer than clicking the home button 1-2 times and hitting the icon. Although I suppose it might make sense if you buried the camera app in a random folder," said forum user drumrobot.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 5 could potentially feature this new version of Siri.

The iPhone 5 is expected to debut mid-2012. The prototype for the iPhone 5 will most likely make its first debut at Apple's “Worldwide Developer Event” that usually takes place in early June.

The rumored features and specifications for the device are 100 Mbps downstream speed and 50 Mbps upstream speed, 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage.

Also rumored for the iPhone 5 is a 3.7-inch screen, wireless synchronizing with iTunes, extended battery life, and video conferencing capabilities.
