Setting a record, the fifth-generation smartphone has outsold the iPhone 4 by more than 400,000 units. The iPhone 4 received a record-breaking 600,000 pre-orders during its release in June 2010. Customers submitted over one million pre-orders in just 24-hours pushing Apple shares on the NASDAQ up 4.3 percent upon the phone's release.

Even by pre-ordering, customers may still have to wait for up to a month to receive their new devices. But many believe it will be well worth the wait, since iPhone 4S advancements include operating speeds equal to that of a desktop with 512K of memory, with up to seven times the speed of the iPhone 4.

“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing Philip Schiller said in an official statement.

“The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”
