Jessica Chastain in Talks With Marvel for Superhero Role?

With Marvel looking to diversify its current lineup of superheroes, it looks like a female superhero could be getting her own standalone movie soon. Last week, Kevin Feige officially announced their slate of Phase 3 projects, which will premiere in theaters between 2016 and 2019. Among those that were mentioned was "Black Panther" with Chadwick Boseman in the title role, "Inhumans" and "Captain Marvel."

According to Screenrant, "Interstellar" actress Jessica Chastain could be in the running to play the role of Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel. In an interview with MTV, Chastain revealed that she had some talks with Marvel about signing on in a film, though she did not disclose for what film and what role it would be.

"We've talked about aligning our forces in the future," said Chastain to MTV. "And here's the thing with me … If you're going to be in a superhero movie, you only get one chance. You're that character forever. So why do a superhero movie and play the boring civilian?"

Soon after rumors broke out of her being in line for the role, Chastain took to her Twitter account to clear up the speculations.

"Oops uh oh … I've never had talks about Captain Marvel. Was referring to a different film from over a year ago, in my recent MTV interview," she tweeted.

Chastain was likely referring to the time when Marvel approached her for a role in "Iron Man 3." Along with Diane Kruger, Gemma Arterton, and Isla Fisher, she was in the running to play the role of Maya Hansen, which eventually went to Rebecca Hall. It was previously reported that Chastain was the studio's first choice. Though she turned down the role due to scheduling problems, she did express hopes of working with Marvel in future films.

However, it appears as though another actress is eyeing the role of "Captain Marvel." According to Cinemablend, "Vikings" star Katheryn Winnick has recently posted a fan art of her as Carol Danvers on her Instagram.

The photo, which shows Winnick in costume, was captioned by the actress, "Thank you for the amazing #fanart and all the love. Got the greatest and most loyal fans out there! #blessed #grateful #captainmarvel #marvel".

"Captain Marvel" is slated for release on July 6, 2018.
