'Jessica Jones' Season 2 Spoilers: Kilgrave Was Only Meant To Appear In Season One

Kilgrave (David Tennant) may have been a singularly hateful villain, but Tennant's exceptional portrayal of the malicious psychopath was so effective that the possibility of never again seeing the character may now leave some fans feeling bereft.

ComicBook.com reports that Kilgrave will likely be replaced by a different villain when "Jessica Jones" returns for its just-announced second season, as the show's producers have just confirmed that the character was only meant to be in one season of the Marvel Studios' Netflix series.

"Well, sure, I mean, we have David Tennant and you want him around forever," "Jessica Jones" showrunner and executive producer Melissa Rosenberg said at the show's panel during the Television Critics Association's press tour. "I mean, he's such an extraordinary actor and he's really, truly one of the loveliest people you'll ever work with, but, you know, the show is called 'Jessica Jones.'"

"The story is about Jessica's arch and how does that play out as best we could, so that was the arch of the first season," Rosenberg explained.

According to executive producer Jeph Loeb, the important thing about any Marvel TV series is that the strength of the antagonist defines the protagonist. The creation and execution of Kilgrave thus gave Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and the rest of the cast someone "who really challenged them - both on an emotional level and also a professional level - because David was just so extraordinary."

"Jessica Jones" follows the titular character, a former superhero, as she attempts to rebuild her life as a private detective. Like "Daredevil," the series is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will eventually pave the way for the Defenders crossover event.

No official announcement has been made regarding the premiere date of "Jessica Jones" Season 2, though it is expected to air at some point in 2016. The show's first season aired in November 2015 and, as with "Daredevil," the next season is expected to debut roughly a year after the first.
