Jimmy Carter Writing Two Christian Books

Over three decades after serving as the president of the United States, 87-year-old Jimmy Carter remains busy. He is now writing two books for a Christian publisher, reflecting on his life and ministry.

Apart from leading America, Carter has also taught Sunday school classes for more than three decades. Coming from that experience, one of his books is titled Through the Year with Jimmy Carter: 366 Daily Meditations From the 39th President.

Zondervan, which has established a publishing partnership with the former president, will release the book in January 2012. With a daily devotional format, Carter’s book will share the personal stories and life lessons God has taught him when he taught Sunday school in Plains, Ga., and Washington, D.C.

Carter’s second book, New International Version Lessons From Life Bible: Personal Reflections with Jimmy Carter, is scheduled for release in March. It will feature the entire text of the NIV translation along with Carter’s personalized experiences, reflections, observations, and insights, including life lessons he’s learned throughout his walk with God and how he has applied the Word to his daily life.

Also part of the Zondervan’s agreement with the former Democratic president is a recently released biography of Carter’s life, Gift of Peace: The Jimmy Carter Story, authored by Elizabeth Raum. The biography is meant for children.

“I chose to partner with Zondervan on these three projects due to their established track record and reputation as a capable publisher that operates with integrity,” the publisher quoted Carter as saying in a statement Friday. “I’m excited to introduce these new titles, and my prayer is that God will use them to touch the hearts and minds of readers.”

“We are honored to be working with President Carter,” Zondervan president and CEO Scott Macdonald said. “President Carter is known for being a man of strong faith and he has collected a great deal of wisdom and insight to share based on his experiences, his personal journey and his walk with Christ.”

The three different titles are intended to reach different readers “through the voice of one of our nation’s most respected and successful leaders,” Macdonald added. “My prayer is that these titles accomplish just that, to God’s glory.”

Carter, a prolific writer since his term at the White House ended in 1981, has previously authored 25 books on various subjects including national and international politics, governance, human rights, morality and religion.

During his presidency, Carter was known for praying several times a day. He has said that Jesus Christ was the driving force in his life. In Conversations With Carter, the former president says he was greatly influenced by a sermon he heard as a young man, called “If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?”
