Kate Beckinsale in Amanda Knox Movie, Filming Begins in Rome

Kate Beckinsale started work on Michael Winterbottom's Amanda Knox-inspired film "The Face on an Angel" in Rome this week.

The 40-year-old actress was cast as a reporter in the film which resembles the controversial Knox murder trial.

Knox is an American who was convicted in 2009, alongside her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, for the murder of her housemate in Italy, Meredith Kercher.

The victim was found with more than 40 wounds, including a deep gash in the throat, in the apartment she shared with Knox in Perugia. The crime was described as a drug-fuelled sexual assault that portrayed Knox as a sex-obsessed maniac, according to prosecutors.

However, the murder conviction was overturned on Oct. 3, 2011- after Knox had served four of the 26-year sentence.

Nevertheless, the Italian Supreme Court overturned Knox's acquittal on March 26, 2013, sending the case back to the lower court for reconsideration. Knox is still facing retrial for the murder of her British roommate today.

Meanwhile, Winterbottom's "Face of an Angel" is based on the book "Angel Faces" by Barbie Latza Nadeau. However, Paul Viragh penned the film's script.

Beckinsale was spotted in-character in jeans and a blazer at Rosati bar in the Piazza de Popolo on Sunday where she was joined by her co-star Daniel Bruhl who portrays a documentary filmmaker. In the movie, the pair work together to uncover the mystery of who killed British student Kercher.

Cara Delevingne also stars in "Face of an Angel" in the role of a suspect in the murder case.

Despite the content about the controversial trial, Beckinsale is not concerned over viewer's reaction to the movie.

"Don't think I haven't had my share of nutters," the actress told the U.K.'s Telegraph. "I've worn latex head-to-toe in three movies, after all."

"The Face of an Angel" is not expected for release until sometime next year.
