Katy Perry 'Devastated' Over Ex-Boyfriend Johnny Lewis' Death

Katy Perry is reportedly "devastated" over the recent death of troubled actor Johnny Lewis, as the pair allegedly shared a close bond which ultimately inspired many of her songs.

The 27-year-old dated Lewis for approximately one year in 2005 before ending the relationship to focus on her music. Lewis was found dead at the age of 28 on Wednesday outside a Los Angeles home along with his elderly landlady.

"[Katy] had to separate from him . . . to get ahead and focus on her career. He was in trouble then and she couldn't help him. A lot of her songs were partially inspired by him," a source told US Weekly Magazine.

"I know 'The One That Got Away' and 'Circle the Drain' are partly about him, as well as Travis [McCoy of Gym Class Heroes]. But she was young and it was a time in her life she cherishes," the source went on.

Police were called to the scene following reports of a screaming woman, and they stumbled upon Lewis' body outside the Los Feliz home. The body of his landlady, who was identified as being 81-year-old Catherine Davis, was found inside of the residence, according to ABC News.

"He appeared to have died from some type of fall, either from the stairway, or from the balcony, or from one of the roofs," LAPD Commander Andrew Smith told KABC.

The "Sons of Anarchy" actor was arrested on Aug. 8 on felony charges and pleaded no contest to one count of assault with a deadly weapon. Although he was sentenced to serve one year in jail, he was released from custody on Friday for unknown reasons.

"They had good times. It's really sad. [Katy] could never help him and couldn't [let herself] go in that direction."

Lewis' death comes three months after Perry vowed to take a break from showbiz in order to properly recover from the breakdown of her marriage to Russell Brand.

"I need to let my heart heal," Perry reportedly told the Daily Mirror when explaining her reasons for taking a break.
