British singing sensation Adele received seven VMA nominations. Her album, 21, is the best-selling album of 2011 so far. Among her nominations are Video of the Year, Best Female Video, and Best Pop Video for her hit single, Rolling in the Deep.

Also following Katy Perry and tying Adele with seven nominations, Kanye West was nominated for Best Hip-Hip Video and Best Male Video, among other awards.

West and Perry are nominated together for Best Collaboration with their video “E.T.”.

Nominations also favored Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, Lady GaGa, Eminem, and Beyonce. The complete list of artists nominated this year may be viewed at mtv.com.

The 28th Annual MTV VMA’s will air live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on August 28. If Perry wins, it will be her first VMA award in her career.

However, Perry has not always been a pop singer.

Raised in an evangelical church with both parents being pastors, Perry has an extensive background in Christianity. Her first album was a self-title gospel record released in 2001, and reached Christian Music Today’s Best Album list that year.

Perry told Rolling Stone magazine last year, “God is very much still a part of my life. But the way details are told in the Bible- that’s very fuzzy for me.”

She continued to explain her current religious stance, “I still believe that Jesus was the son of God. But, I also believe in extraterrestrials, and that there are people sent from God to be messengers, and all sorts of crazy stuff.”

The Christian Post reported in May that Perry has said her parents were very non-accepting and that her upbringing was constraining. Perry is married to British comedian Russell Brand who has said he is a practicing Hindu.

Talking about her recent practice of meditation Perry said, “In my faith, you’re supposed to have faith. At this point, I’m kind of a drifter. I am open to anything.”

Right now Perry has said she is relishing in everything life throws her way. “My sponge is so big and wide and I’m soaking everything up and my mind has been radically expanded,” she said.

Her “California Dreams” world tour has been underway since February, and by its end in November, she will have toured 122 countries.
