Kevin Costner, Princess Diana Almost Starred in 'Bodyguard 2'

Kevin Costner revealed that Princess Diana was to co-star with him in "The Bodyguard 2," a sequel to the iconic 1992 film that featured Whitney Houston.

"Diana and I had been talking about doing 'Bodyguard 2.' I told her I would take care of her just the same way that I took care of Whitney," Costner told Anderson Cooper. "She wanted me to write it for her. I said 'I'll tailor it for you if you're interested.' She goes, 'I am interested.'"

Kevin Costner also revealed to Anderson Cooper on his "Anderson" daytime talk show that had it not been for Princess Diana's untimely death in the 1997 car crash, the two could have appeared in the film together. He received the script August 31, 1997- just a day before the infamous accident.

The idea behind the film was simple, building on Costner's established character, former special agent and bodyguard Frank Farmer. In the film, Farmer would take another job protecting the People's Princess from paparazzi, stalkers, and others seeking to do her harm.

Similar to the premise of the original movie, Costner would then have an affair with the woman he's paid to protect. Unfortunately and coincidentally, Princess Diana of Wales, her male companion Dodi Fayed, and her driver, Henri Paul, were all killed by a crash caused in part by paparazzi.

The original script for "The Bodyguard" was written for Steve McQueen and Diana Ross in the 1970s, but for some reason, never made it into production. Now, however, Warner Brothers Studios is set to revive the storyline and place it into a modern setting.

"The Bodyguard" sequel will feature an Iraq war veteran-turned-bodyguard fulfilling his duties to protect a woman from a stalker. Instead of threatening phone calls, though, Twitter, Facebook, and possibly other social media will be used.

No cast has yet been announced for the film.
