Light - Jesus Christ - Can Cure the Winter Blues

Winter has come. Along with it, the day becomes shorter and night falls upon those in the upper hemisphere sooner. And with less light during the wintertime, more people fall into Seasonal Affective Disorder, sometimes called "the Holiday Blues" or Winter Depression as a result of not receiving enough light.

Some studies suggest that bright light with a frequency spectrum simulating the frequencies in sunlight can help to lighten the mood of the person suffering from this type of depression.
Scientists are not the only ones who know the value of bright light. As Christmas approaches, millions of Christians will be waiting in the anticipation for the birth of Jesus Christ, who was the true light of the world.

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

“He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world” (John 1:7-9).

Jesus Christ came was the light of truth that shone on the world like the sun on the earth. The scene of Jesus bringing light into the world with this coming sharply contrasts to the scene in which mankind was living without God.

“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened” (Romans 1:21).

There is only darkness in Romans 1. Men suppressed the Truth and knowledge of God and embraced the darkness instead.

As we reflect on the hopeless situation mankind dug themselves in, let us also remember that Christ was the one who brought light into our dark lives. He is the light that shines brighter than the Star of Bethlehem which led the three wise men to him.

We are “ by nature objects of wrath” but God sent his one and only Son to us out of His unconditional love for us to save us.

By reflecting on the love of Christ who “made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man,” and in the end gave his life to save ours, let us show the world that Christians have the true cure for any “Holiday Blues.” We have the brightest light there is—Jesus Christ. Isn’t that something to smile about?
