'Major Crimes' Season 3 Spoilers: Rusty Forced to Choose a Family (TRAILER VIDEO)

"Major Crimes" returns for a third season tonight and calls into question the meaning and idea of family. One of the major storylines features Rusty, who must choose between Captain Raydor and a surprise visitor who appears on tonight's premiere.

"We begin our first episode with a different Rusty," creator James Duff told TV Guide. "He has changed quite a bit. The experience of testifying on his own and having his say in the courtroom, reduced the whining, reduced the teenage angst. He's sort of moving beyond and looking into his own heart and how he can make things better. Then, out of the blue, he's knocked off stride by the reappearance of [his mother] who he thought he was separated from for good."

Rusty decides to keep the interaction with his mother a secret from Capt. Raydor, at least until he is more certain of what he wants to do. Eventually, he will introduce the two women, and sparks fly. Raydor was just preparing to make Rusty a more permanent member of her own family … now, with Rusty's mother back in the picture, she rethinks her plan.

Meanwhile, Sanchez takes his mother into his own home to care for her, while Tao begins work serving as a police consultant for a TV show. Provenza becomes involved in Rusty's secret regarding his mother's re-entry into his life, no doubt causing friction between Provenza and Raydor.

"Expectations can ruin us, but without expectations we sometimes don't perform," Duff said. "It's about how to harness the power of expectation to do good. Expectation is a tricky thing, but it's part of what made humans king of the jungle. Our ability to anticipate and look into the future and to understand the possibilities that await us, that's what moves the human race. And yet, it's also a bit of a struggle."

"Major Crimes" airs Monday nights on TNT.
