4. Carney has vowed to eliminate the consumer carbon tax
While Carney has wholeheartedly endorsed the idea that climate change constitutes an existential threat, he has vowed to eliminate what he condemns as the “divisive” consumer carbon tax that requires consumers and small businesses to pay a charge for using fuels including gasoline, natural gas, diesel and home heating oil. In a statement published in January, Carney announced his intention to “cancel it and replace it with incentives to reward people for greener choices.”
Examples of efforts to reward people for making environmentally conscious choices that Carney wants to pursue include “new consumer incentives to lower costs for families investing in our clean future” by embracing “home retrofits.”
Carney added, “We will also enhance and recapitalize the Greener Homes Grant and improve the efficiency of the application process. These measures will be targeted to lower income households.”
Another aspect of Carney’s vision includes increasing “financial incentives for energy efficient homes through alternative financing mechanisms and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.” He also signaled his intention to explore offering discounts on mortgage insurance premiums for low- or middle-income households that make energy efficient renovations or purchase energy efficient homes.”
