Mary Tyler Moore and Others Celebrate Betty White

Mary Tyler Moore was just one of the many celebrities on hand to celebrate America’s Golden Girl, Betty White. The two have been friends since working together on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in the 1970’s; Moore received a standing ovation during her appearance, which was one of her first after undergoing brain surgery.

NBC aired a half-hour special last night that honored, and poked fun at, Betty White, who turned 90. White has become a household name throughout her career, which started with series “Life With Elizabeth” and includes such hits as “Mary Tyler Moore,” “The Golden Girls,” “The Betty White Show,” “The Pet Set” and now “Hot in Cleveland.” Co-stars from throughout her life joined in the birthday party.

Carol Burnett, Vicki Lawrence, Carl Reiner as well as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler all appeared on the special, which was a real treat for fans. Moore went through a major health scare and had surgery to remove benign tumors from her brain. Her two appearances earned much applause and standing ovations from the crowd. She helped close the show with everyone gathering on stage to sing “Thank You for Being a Friend,” the theme from “Golden Girls.”

Even though the show aired last night, it was taped late last week. White herself said that she would be home with her golden retriever named Pontiac. “Usually, I’ll try to play catch-up with all the things I never will catch up on. I may just do crossword puzzles and indulge myself and have a wonderful time with my dog.”

The special was followed by the debut of another White series, “Off Their Rockers,” which features senior citizens playing pranks on unsuspecting people. It premiered to an audience of 12.23 million.
