Medicaid Covering $9,000 Late-Term Abortions, Says Operation Rescue

With the debate in Washington D.C. this Thursday on the hot-button issue of tax-funded abortions in President Barack Obama's proposed health care bill approaching, pro-life Christian activist organization Operation Rescue has discovered that millions of taxpayer money are being used to allegedly fund late-term abortions.

In an undercover investigation in which a member of Operation Rescue contacted abortion clinics in 12 of the 15 states that fund the procedure through Medicaid, all 12 offered late-term abortions for no medical reason.

In one such call recorded and released to the media, an organization member called Southwestern Women's Options, a clinic located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, stating that she was 26 weeks pregnant and was having a healthy pregnancy, but needed an abortion because her husband had just lost his job.

The SWO employee, who simply identified herself as "Sue," told the caller that Medicaid would cover the entire cost, which she said would "range anywhere from eight to nine thousand dollars."

"If the American people knew this was going on, they would be outraged," Senior Policy Advisor of Operation Rescue Cheryl Sullenger told The Christian Post Wednesday. "We released this information because we wanted to inform the general public where their money is going, and we wanted to point out that Medicaid already pays for this."

The government program, completely funded by taxpayer money, is only required to cover abortions in cases of rape, incest or if the mother's life is in danger, but according to Operation Rescue, "these exceptions have been exploited in the past to include more abortions," and that it is state money that generally funds the procedures.

"It's shocking that our tax dollars would pay $9,000 for a third-trimester abortion simply because of a lost job," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman in a statement. "The vast majority of the American people strongly object to their tax money being used in this way."
