Mexico Earthquake Today: 6.2 Quake Forces Residents to Flee

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has hit the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, forcing scared residents to flee buildings.

The quake hit in the Pacific Ocean about 35 miles south-west of the city of Mapastepec, near Mexico's border with Guatemala, and was felt hundreds of miles away in El Salvador's capital, San Salvador.

Early reports have not indicated widespread damage or casualties.

The U.S. Geological survey has reported on its website that the quake struck at 12:27 local time at a depth of 40 miles.

Mexico lies on Pacific Rim of Fire, and is often a victim of earthquakes.
